The coming year would have a big impact on the Toronto wrestling scene. The last cards of 1976 had featured NWA Champ Terry Funk making successful defenses against Dom DeNucci and Carlos Rocha, while The Sheik had lost then regained his U.S Title from Thunderbolt Patterson. The consensus was that that The Sheik's act was tiring. It had been nearly nine years since The Sheik had taken over Toronto and the wrestling world was changing. The young up-and-coming stars like Ric Flair, Ricky Steamboat, Bob Backlund, and Jimmy Snuka were ushering in a new era and could not be ignored.
